Maldives - Baa Atoll

Soneva Fushi Resort & Six Senses Spa
Soneva Fushi Resort, the first " Robinson Crusoe " style hideaway in the Maldives, is set on the privately owned, uninhabited, tropical paradise island of Kunfunadhoo.

Soneva Fushi is the only resort in the Baa Atoll, to the north of Male' Atoll. There are 19 Atolls that stretch over 800 kilometers North to South that consist of the 1,190 islands which are the Maldives.

Sister hotel to Soneva Gili, Soneva Fushi caused quite a stir when it first opened its doors nine years ago. Built on land, rather than over water, it avoided anything that would compete with the lush tropical jungle that surrounded it and succeeded in making a very attractive style statement out of rattan, thatch and natural fabrics. It sits upon Kunfunadhoo (a beach-rimmed island that takes about an hour to circuit on foot) and the wide choice of accommodation available contributes to the feeling that this is a sprawling ethnic village, rather than a carefully-contrived resort.

Kunfunadhoo at 1,400 metres long and almost 400 metres wide, is one of the largest islands in the Maldives. Apart from the crystal clear waters, for which the Maldives is world-renowned, the island's unusually rich vegetation provides a unique nature experience. Villas and rooms are scattered along the beach and tucked into the lush greenery, providing the ultimate in privacy.

The sheer size of the island allows an enjoyable exploration by bicycle or an energetic run on one of Soneva Fushi's hidden jogging trails. The absence of any other hotel in the Baa Atoll leaves one spoilt for choice of desert islands to picnic on. Most of the dive sites you will explore are new discoveries made by Soneva Fushi Resort.

Maldives - North Male Atoll (Kaafu Atoll)

Soneva Gili Resort & Six Sense Spa
Named as ‘Hotel of the Year’ in Tatler’s ‘Travel Guide 2003’, Soneva Gili is somewhere to get excited about. It is the embodiment of rustic chic, combining today’s creature comforts with the simplicity of life at the water’s edge. Indeed, Soneva Gili is the first all water villa resort in the Maldives, the 4 jetties stretching out from its main island supporting its 45 villas, a handful of which are only accessed by boat. Tranquillity and privacy are paramount here, the 12-metres that separates each villa giving guests the illusion that they are adrift in their own little world. And what a magical world it is, whether you opt for a Villa Suite, a Residence, a Crusoe Residence or go for the ultimate and choose the ‘Private Reserve’. The Villa Suites are 210-square-metres, special features including over-water decks and rooftop sun decks. The Residences are larger again, whilst the Crusoe Residences stand alone off the island and are accessed by their own private boats. The brand new overwater ‘Private Reserve’ boasts 2 bedrooms, a private spa and enough facilities to ensure you need never emerge. The forty-four stilted accommodations continue the Soneva philosophy of ‘Intelligent Luxury’. They are crafted in a traditional style from natural materials and offer roof-top and over-water sundecks, featuring open air bathrooms, sumptuous daybeds and a personal entertainment center. For the ultimate privacy, seven Crusoe Residences are only accessible by personal boat.

Come ashore for some great dining and equally great wines. Or perhaps a romantic moonlit dinner delivered right to the villa. It is possible here. The Six Senses Spa offers everything expected, and some things unexpected; glass floor-panels beneath massage tables heighten the sensual experience, whilst a Maldivian sand massage presents yet another new encounter.

The Maldives is a paradise for snorkeling and diving and the resort has its own fully –equipped PADI diving school plus a variety of water sports. This place tops the list of must-do destinations for those in the know.

Maldives - South Male Atoll (Kaafu Atoll)

Cocoa Island
Located in the less developed South Malé Atoll, the island is a nirvana for divers. On the west side lies the Vadhoo Channel, considered to be one of the best dive sites in the Maldives; on the other is a quiet reef for snorkelling flanked by a curl of rockless beach which tapers into a spit of sand. This is as long as the island, disappearing with the advance of the Maldivian tide. On the horizon are other dots, turned pink in the early evening. Fishing boats bob on the glassy sea. The beach is gently shelving, a perfect undulation, and there are sea grapes, hibiscus and palms. On a perfect night, watch the moon rise on one side of the island at the same time the sun falls on the far curl.

The architecture is consistent with the setting - as well as the Owner's Beach House (opening April 2003), four one-bedroom villas and two, two-bedroom Presidential villas (opening March 2003), there are 30 dhoni boats, the same as the fishermen use, built from bleached wood. They sit above the water, reached via planked walkways. The aesthetic is beguilingly primitive, replete with air-conditioning and a fine attention to detail. The view from the wide platform bed is directly out to the watery expanse. There is a veranda, a sort of open deck, from which you can slip into the sea. And the bathrooms, all with double sinks, a bath and shower, share the horizon views.

In this refuge you can rely on room service and eat like a castaway - fresh lobster, caught locally, cooked in the Keralan style. Or you can dine, feet in the sand, at the main restaurant beneath an alang-alang pavilion and huge Maldivian sky. A lip pool melts into the ocean. There is a Shambhala Retreat, with more open-air pavilions for massage and yoga. Like the hidden corners to your suite and on the beach, all are quiet places where you can enjoy nature's uncanny power to overwhelm. This is the essence of Cocoa, a retreat in the purest sense, or serenity found.

Maldives - South Ari Atoll

Hilton Maldives Resort & Spa - Spa Water Villa
At the tip of the island, the Spa Village is a brilliantly innovative ‘resort within a resort’. A spa junky’s paradise, there can be nothing more divine than an overwater spa villa with its own treatment room offering endless opportunities to indulge in each and every therapy available.

For gourmets, desert islands, however fabulous, can have their drawbacks. Here, no such problems arise. Not only are the settings of the various restaurants out of this world, but, as one food journalist commented, the cooking is ‘some of the best’ she had ever tasted. For total relaxation, the spa will pamper guests to oblivion and beyond whilst water sports, superb diving, floodlit tennis, an excellent gym and a huge yacht for island hopping and cruising will keep the more active in heaven, which is exactly where guests think they are.
